Stop Under Valuing Your Art!

Oh hey look!  I spy an offer for $150.  Sounds like something I'd be interested in!  They want my style?  Sweet!  Wanted in a week's time.  Sounds doable.  They want an artist willing to draw ten characters...each of which are 500x500 pixels?!  You're out of your mind... if you think... that I'm... NOT going to take that delicious deal!!!!!!!

Clearly just kidding right now.

That's a rip off and an UTTER WASTE of PRECIOUS TIME!  Stop settling for weak funds when you need them.  If you take over an hour to do something, you absolutely need to become an hourly worker and make the amount you deserve.  Even if you don't take that long you should still at least charge as if you are one.

Now you may say, "but my work sucks so I should price it WAY cheaper".  NO!  Not only are you allowing buyers to saturate the market with cheap ass offers, but you're wasting your time doing that only to be able to buy lunch two days in-a-row.  It also gives people an invite to shame people, who work as artists, as if they're not worth the amount of effort they put in.

Quality does matter, but if someone isn't willing to pay decently for your time THAT should be an incentive to look elsewhere.  The fact of the matter is either you went to them or THEY CAME TO YOU. Someone is willing to pay for your work, you just have to reach them.  Product should never be a hand out and you shouldn't struggle to make a living(or get a meal) no matter what your line of work is.  If you flip burgers and fill orders for 40/hrs a day you should be able to provide yourself with(all basic necessities) a roof over your head, food in your belly, insurance under your belt, and some extra on the side to save and spend as you please.

There are people who WILL argue pricing with you, turn them down IMMEDIATELY.  Unless you're willing to give them a sale for additional pieces they're willing to buy, do NOT bend.  They may whip out the ol' "I can find someone who can do the job for less!" Then GO HUNNY!  I've got better things to do than waste my time on you when someone else wants to pay for my shit IN CASH not a LEMME BUMP YOUR PRICE DOWN TO FIT MY CHEAP ASS POCKETS!

Some may and will argue that some artwork just isn't worth the(at least) minimum wage you are asking for.  It MAY be true.  When it comes down to it if you're not getting work DON'T CHANGE YOUR PRICE!  Get better at your craft or find clients who will buy.  When you do get that first job you'll feel great for refusing to sell yourself short.  It may take years and you may have to go get extra training and/or a job on the side, but don't devalue your art or time.  They're both precious things.  People work so hard to get the masses to understand the value of art; They are more relevant in this world than you may know.
